The Anglican Church has always been a well of authors and musicians. From St. Augustine, Julian of Norwich, and Charles Wesley, to C.S. Lewis and J.I. Packer. This tradition is alive and well in our current times. Below are the liturgical books of the ACNA, as well as writings from those in our own diocese. In the future we will be adding others from the ACNA who have written books or music. Until then, enjoy these gems.

LITURGY

Anglicans are most definitely a people of the book. Below are links to those books that instruct us in our worship, and make us who we are.

English Standard Version.

First and foremost, the Anglican Church is based on Scripture as supreme. Our prayerbooks are just expressions of what is found in this sacred and holy book. The Anglican Church in North America has chosen the ESV as the standard text for our churches and liturgy. It is both very accurate in translation, but very readable at the same time.

To read the ESV or to purchase one go to esv.org.

The ACNA also has a version containing the Apocrypha (for the official statement from the ACNA on these books please go to To Be A Christian, the ACNA’s catechism.)

2019 Book of Common Prayer

From the beginning of the Anglican Church the Book of Common Prayer has bound us as a people. With it, we come together and are able to worship in unity. It also, because of the fact it is just a reflection of the truth found in Scripture, allows us to pray and praise in ways that are too difficult or distant in the places we find ourselves.

To be a christian (ACNA Catechism)

In the Great Commission, Jesus calls His church to “go therefore and make disciples.” We do this by baptizing them, and teaching them. The catechism (Greek “teach orally), is the traditional way the Church has instructed her members throughout the centuries. Written in a question and answer format, this is helpful in instructing, but answering questions about what Anglicans believe.

Bishop Bill Atwood

The General, The Boy, & Recapturing Joy

thegeneralblue.jpg

This book explains how we were created for joy, and relates compelling stories of how to recapture joy in the midst of negative circumstances and emotions. Drawing from life lessons from his Grandfather, Bill Atwood shares engaging stories! As soon as I read this book I started retelling the stories to everyone who would listen. The stories are inspirational and provide clear models of how to handle difficult emotions. The brain science and principles that explain how to handle hard emotions are clear and practical. I plan to read it again (and again) and share it with others.

A Banquet Seat & A Listening Ear

In this wonderful book, Bp. Bill recounts several moments of his life and how in these moments God reveals the truth about who He is, who Bp. Bill is, and the truth of the situation. This book is written so as we read it, we are reminded of the relational and close love of a Father who cares.

Here & Coming

hereandcomingblue.jpg

HERE & COMING is an introduction to living in the kingdom of God here and now! When Jesus taught, “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as in heaven,” He intended us to pray, work, and long for things on earth to become as they are in heaven. This book seeks to help you make progress in living that out now instead of just waiting to inherit it in the future.

Spiritual Journey

SPIRITUAL JOURNEY provides an understanding and practical application of the Spiritual Journey as presented by St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila. Bishop Atwood carefully explains elements of the spiritual journey that Christians will recognize in their own pilgrimage. This book examines landmarks along the way that often baffle or defeat Christians. Bishop Atwood’s spiritual director described the journey as a “spiral whereby we pass through the same [issues] several times at different levels while we move closer in union with Christ.”

Are we there yet?

arewethereyetblue.jpg

ARE WE THERE YET reveals common elements of the spiritual journey, enabling us to: 1) know the general direction to take, 2) confirm that we are being guided by the Holy Spirit, 3) get an idea of our location along the path, and 4) reassure us that we are still progressing along the right path and in the right direction.
